24 Hour Comics Day 2008

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Straight from ComicsPRO, the new organizers of 24 Hour Comics Day, it has been announced that this year’s 24 Hour Comics Day will be held on Saturday, October 18th, and I will be taking part for the second year.

This year will be fun as I now have the Toonin’ View Screencast, so you can all “tune in and view” as I cartoon throughout the day (something I wanted to do last year but didn’t implement in time). And if I can juggle it, I may even take calls.

More details as they come! You can also keep up on the news here: http://24hcd.blogspot.com/

Now, I’ve only got 6 months to prepare…

24 Hour Comics Day - 2008

24 Hour Kitteh had too much catnip

It’s that time of year again, 24 Hour Comics Day! This will be my second year participating and I’m really looking forward to it. Last year’s event was fun, but tiring. And as some of you may know, I actually met my goal with time to spare.

What will be different this year are the additions of Twitter and Ustream. Since I work digitally, I didn’t go to an actual event location, and wrote short blog posts roughly every hour to chart my progress. This year, everyone gets to watch! And instead of writing whole blog posts about my progress, I can simply tweet about it!

At 0:00 hours (midnight PST) on Saturday, October 18th I will begin broadcasting live at TooninView.com (this links to my Ustream page). And except for meal breaks, I’ll be on there all day, until I’m done (hey, if I finish early like last year, I’m a goin’ to bed!) So, stop by to chat, to watch, or just listen to my 24 hour long mp3 playlist! lol

Now, as far as what I’m actually going to be creating on that day, I’ve bounced around a few ideas in my head since last year. Last time, my goal was to create three strips per “page” to create a 24 page comic book, totaling 72 individual comics strips created in a single day. That was a major undertaking by itself, but I used a very simple art style that allowed me to complete a strip an average of every 12.5 minutes.

Even on my best day, an “Oy” strip takes 25-35 minutes to complete; often an hour or longer if I have complicated details. And since I also have to write the jokes/story within the 24 hours, and the fact I don’t really have time to do a non-Oy related project, I have to make the nature of the event match my comic creation needs. I also don’t want to just slap it out since the final product will publish on the Oy website (and even books down the road) for all to see. So, I don’t want to have something embarrassing at the end of the day.

Inspiration struck a few nights ago, and the answer was so simple, I wonder why it took me almost a year to figure out: In 24 hours, I will draw 24 strips in their normal horizontal format. Then I will rearrange each comic into a vertical format (old comic strip collections used to do this before the “Garfield” size books came along; some publications still do this), three panels to a page. This cuts my workload down by 2/3rds and will allow me to focus on quality over quantity. I will have content for my site, and a publication to send in to the 24 Hour Comics Day powers-that-be. It’s a win-win!

So mark your calendars for Saturday, October 18th @ 0:00 hours (midnight) Pacific Standard Time, and check in on my progress at Tooninview.com, and/or follow me on Twitter.

My 24 Comics Day 2008 - T-Minus 12 Hours

Friday, October 17th, 2008

It’s getting closer folks! I’ll be going to bed WAY early tonight so I can get up at midnight and set out on the Second Annual oyComics.com 24 Hour Comics Day!!  You can watch it live over at TooninView.com (I’ll also embed the stream into a blog post here on the site, but honestly, it’s easier to just go to the actual show page). For the first few hours I’ll just be writing the script, but after that, it’s DRAW, DRAW, DRAW, until I’m done or run out of time.

And if you have a valid uStream account, you can participate in the chat session.

Remember, it all starts at midnight (PST) over at TooninView.com!

24 Hour Comics Day: The Aftermath (2008)

Monday, October 20th, 2008

24 Hour Comics Day 2008 has come and gone, and the answer to the question, “Is it possible to make 24 comic strips in a single day (while broadcasting live on the Internet),” has been answered with a resounding, “Yes!”

This was my 2nd year participating and my completion record is now 2 for 2! (Read here for last year’s 72 strip insanity)

No physical venues were close enough for me to participate in the traditional sense (and my drawing is tied to my desktop computer anyway), so I checked with the 24 Hour Comics Day organizers if it was okay for me to just participate at home and uStream it. They didn’t have any problem with it, and ultimately they even added a “Digital Participants” listing on their site: 24hrCD - Digital Participants (Yeah, that’s me at the top.)

I do need to submit a printed version of my comic according to the rules originally set by Scott McCloud (nothing fancy, just a normal, paper copy), and since this is technically a “comic book” event, my strips will be printed in a vertical format (again, a change from my plan last year).

I can’t even begin to describe how satisfying it is to create a 24-part comic strip storyline from script to final colors in a single day (not to mention while participating in my show’s uStream chat at the same time).

Last year I got done at just under 19 hours. This year it took 22 hours, 45 minutes, (which works out to about 57 minutes per strip).

And my comics buffer: 4 weeks! It all starts here

I also recorded most of the day, so you can watch all the videos if you have a whole day to sit and watch: TooninView.com
