Expelled (Movie) - A personal review

I don’t normally like to tackle hot-button issues on this blog and website, I want this place to be a respite from the harsh realities and controversies of the world by bringing you a daily dose of humor.

But this… what I want to share with you today, strikes at the heart of many elements of American society. We’re talking First Amendment rights being squelched, people being treated like animals, our children being taught WHAT to think instead of HOW, and many more dangerous consequences (and frankly, present realities) if this infatuation with a flawed ideal is allowed to be the only say on how the world works.

I’m talking about Darwinism. To clarify, I’m not talking about the theory of evolution specifically. There are elements of evolution that are unquestionably true. “Over time, things change.” Even for Christians such as myself, that concept merely fits in to how the world works, it does not contradict our beliefs as the Darwinists would have you believe and use as a crutch to make us appear “wrong”. I still don’t believe that means we came from apes, especially considering, um, apes are, y’know, still around *cough*, but I digress.

Darwinism however, is different, it is a system of ideas that many scientists have latched onto as the last word on everything. It has “evolved” from being a scientific theory, to a unilateral dogma that borders on religious fanaticism, ironically echoing the principles of the darker days of the Roman Catholic church: Any dissent, is blasphemy.

I’m saying all this because my wife and I just saw the documentary “Expelled”, starring Ben Stein, over the weekend. And wow! I had some doubts about the validity of the film, but it was presented quite fairly and left me with a lot of questions, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I’ve always known something wasn’t quite right about the unilateral decision that Darwinism is the end all be all explanation of everything, especially considering the theory itself has never been fully proven (no matter what the Darwinists have spoon-fed the public and the U.S. education system to believe). You know what they say, “If you state something often enough it becomes true.”

But I never knew it went as deep as the powers-that-be shamelessly covering up dissenters; sometimes over minor “infractions” of stating a concept, gasp! Ruining people’s entire livelihood, all in the name of being “right” rather than seeking truth, is appalling. That’s the exact OPPOSITE purpose of science. It’s not about making everything fit in a pre-classified box, it’s about discovering what’s real.

I mean, several of the ousted people weren’t even necessarily anti-Darwin, they merely suggested that Intelligent Design (ID) has interesting merits. That’s functioning like a cult, not a scientific collective. When confronted about the issues, when they weren’t hemming and hawing (and I’m not being sarcastic there), the Darwinists basically implied that new ideas were dangerous, Darwin figured it all out, end of story. This from people whose entire job is to make new discoveries!

Yet… Darwinism at one time, was itself a “new” idea. Was it shut down and covered up? Obviously not. Are we to believe, that in an amazing age of scientific advancement, one soul figured it all out? Doubtful.

What was especially ludicrous were the scientists that were more comfortable with ideas about aliens and crystals being the origin of life, but in the same breath could confidently claim God was a fairy tale. Meanwhile, every one of them could not give a straight answer about the origin of life. And frankly, I don’t think it was fancy editing.

I’d much rather (and do) believe that God is in control of everything, than that we came on the backs of magic crystals from the land of the pixie people. Even if by some chance it were true, it still begs the question, “Where’d the crystals come from in the first place?”

Go see this movie if it’s still playing near you (it’s a limited release right now, I wonder why…), or make a note to watch the DVD. Seriously, this goes beyond who’s right and who’s wrong, this goes beyond any kind of conspiracy theory, and it has nothing to do with atheism vs. religion or right-wing vs. left-wing (as some people have tried to use as a red herring to debunk this film)… This is about abuse of power, and it doesn’t matter what side of the wall you’re on, this is a dangerous road we’ve been traveling for decades! And the most infuriating part is that it’s been perpetuated by people who claim religious people are brain-washed! Who’s doing the brain-washing now? Because it certainly isn’t my church.

If you care about knowing the truth, if you believe in Darwinism, if you disbelieve it, if you believe elements are true but not the whole package, if you believe something else or are simply undecided: You owe it to yourself to watch this film. Of supreme importance, especially to anyone that will judge it as a big joke, is the fact this film neither strives to disprove Darwinism, nor proves Intelligent Design (or, by extension, Creationism).

It merely points out, to a disturbing level, that something shady is going on in the American scientific community. The Darwinists are not proving themselves correct by following scientific principles, they’re merely making themselves right. And there’s a huge difference.

If for no other reason, go so you can hear the silence in the theatre as a link is made between Darwinism and Nazi Germany. Before I saw the film, that sounded like a scare tactic, but there is no shock value in it… it is simply true.

Bottom line, if a person or group’s entire MO is to silence any and all opposition instead of standing on their own ideals and facts, then they’re hiding something. As my favorite quote from the movie goes, “Beware the sound of one hand clapping.”

I’m also not one to dive into the debate of such “hot button” issues, but for a brief moment I would like to say that I’m PROUD to be a Christian, I’m PROUD to believe in what I believe in..GOD… and I for one cannot walk around this earth on a single day for a single moment and NOT see God’s miracle at work. “How can I explain these miracles?” I cannot. Mortal man cannot. That’s why they are indeed classified as miracles. These things did NOT just happen. Science has tried and continues to try and “explain” things because that is how science is rooted; It is the very foundation of scientific principles. When science tries to explain the miracles of life,…it can only do so to a point. Beyond this,..the root of life,..as to how it all began,…can NOT be explained by science and THAT my friend is where God steps in. These are my perceptions and I’m sticking by them. As for your point about “saying things long enough will make them true”, you are right on the money there and that is indeed a big problem in our society today! I could go on for paragraph after paragraph here, but that would be simply an act in redundancy as Danny has covered it extremely well and in full detail.

Just saw Expelled, it would seem that Ben Stein’s movie is designed to promote dangerously-free thought, especially more thinking about motivations that drive American academia and a lot of other behind-the-scenes worldview that we tend to take for granted.

You go Todd! I agree with you completely! Did you know that “saying things long enough will make them true” is almost identical to a quote from Lenin “A lie told often enough becomes the truth.” That is a scary thought, especially when you see how many instances it has come and continues to come into play here in this country, in the courts, in the media, and in our daily lives.

    Amazing movie! It’s about time!

(Patrick, could you clarify what you mean by dangerously free thought? I’m having trouble working out what you are trying to say.)
