Favorite Video Games #3 - Metroid Prime
At long last! I haven’t beaten it yet, but I’m reviewing it anyway…
#3 - Metroid Prime (GameCube)
Released: 2002; Publisher: Nintendo; Rating: T
What it is
It’s the game that launched a genre: the world’s first “First-Person Adventure”. You play as Samus Aran; she’s a futuristic bounty hunter on a planet full of secrets. And you can roll into a ball when needed. Enough said.
Why I like it
I got this on a whim during a buy 3 get the 4th free sale on used video games, it ended up being the free one, and it is the best game I got that day! (Though, one of the other games I got was Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, which I’m not playing until I beat #1, so I can’t compare yet.)
It combines the adventure of Zelda, with the immersion of Halo. In fact, I think this game is better than Halo. Especially considering the basic premise of the series (person in super suit battles floaty, bio-engineered aliens) has been around long before this game or the Xbox ever existed, and Halo’s story is suspiciously similar (person in super suit battles floaty, bio-engineered aliens…)
Is it still available?
Absolutely! You can either get it used , or, you may find it brand new if you go to the right store. It is native to the GameCube and is fully compatible with the Wii. In fact, unless you’re one of the fortunate few who own a progressive scan model of the GameCube, I recommend playing it on the Wii; you’ll forget this game came out in the last console generation. There are also two direct sequels which I have yet to play: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (which I’ve heard isn’t quite as good, but is still better than most games) and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (which I’ve heard knocks the other games out of the park, and fully embraces the Wii’s new control scheme to show what those little Wii-motes can really do.)
