Ask and ye shall receive
Recently I was talking with my wife about the state of certain shows on TV right now. Specifically Lost and Gilmore Girls. I stated that Gilmore Girls needed to call it quits after this season and Lost needed to wrap up its convoluted storyline before it ran even further down a back alley, got lost and then canceled before it could find the light again (like Alias before it.)
Regarding Gilmore Girls, I really like this show. My brain runs at 90mph and the pace of the show is an ideal speed for my taste. Or, rather, it used to be. This season has been a near 180-degree turn from the way things were. The original creators of the show left before the 7th season due to some kind of contract dispute, and it showed. The pace was slower, the plot twists became more soap operatic than ever (there were always person A is fighting with person B stories, but it was done with more style before) and overall everything just felt forced. I felt that unless they could get the original creators back, they needed to end it this year with some sense of respectability before it became that show that outlived its usefulness and just won’t go away (*cough* Seventh Heaven *cough*)
I just found out yesterday, they’re ending it this year! It feels weird to root for the finale of one of my favorite shows, but it is necessary. Even despite the problems and my complaints, Gilmore Girls is still one of the best shows on TV. I wouldn’t say Gilmore Girls lived past its prime this year, but it came really close.

Then comes Lost: I came in mid-season the first year and got sucked right in. Then I watched nearly all of season 2 and felt like a big joke was being played on me. Absolutely nothing of substance happened is season 2, and I get the idea that that was the point! I’ve held off on watching any of this year’s season until the DVD set comes out. Given the nature of the show, a milked out series doesn’t work. And I said that they should wrap up all the loose ends and make next season the last season.
My wish has partially come true. Lost will go on until 2010 (6 seasons instead of the 4 I suggested.) They’re telling us that now, which is a rare, if not unprecedented announcement. Which means we can (hopefully) be assured that the plot is actually going somewhere and they aren’t just making it up week to week.
Part of this plan is to release partial seasons of 16 episodes back to back (instead of 22 stretched over 26+ weeks with repeats.) This makes for a longer wait between seasons, but for people like me who have quickly gotten to a point of not caring what happens anymore, this is great. Instead of wondering what long-term affects a major event on the show will have, and be strung along with, “maybe we’ll end it this year, maybe not,” meanwhile, Locke’s an alien! Or is he?, we can simply sit back and enjoy the ride.
